Charleston Road Corridor Plan City of Palo Alto

Traffic Calming > Charleston Road Corridor Plan City of Palo Alto

The City of Palo Alto sought to address existing and future transportation conditions of the Charleston-Arastradero Road Corridor. The Corridor provides access to 11 public and private schools, 2 public parks, a senior citizen housing development, a public library and community center, a neighborhood shopping center and several residential neighborhoods. The City of Palo Alto hired TJKM to study significant issues including school commute safety and the effects of future travel growth including that induced by expected land development and redevelopment. TJKM developed the corridor improvement plan along with associated cost estimates and a funding plan for its realization then presented the solution to the Planning Commission and Council who approved the plan in 2004. The plan included four-to-three lane conversion for one-half of the Corridor’s extent, traffic adaptive signal operation, provision of landscaped center medians and roadside frontages, continuous and tinted bicycle lanes, a variety of pedestrian crosswalk improvements and other elements. TJKM began working with the City of Palo Alto to implement the Plan in January 2006.
