I-680 HOT Lane Operations Analysis - Bay Area

Freeway Operations > I-680 HOT Lane Operations Analysis - Bay Area

This project was the first of its kind in Northern California and a significant one for the San Francisco Bay Area. HOT (High Occupancy Toll) lanes are becoming more popular as traffic becomes more and more congested in urban areas. TJKM conducted a comprehensive study of the I-680 corridor, the formerly number one ranked worst commute corridor in the San Francisco Bay Area. The results of that study led to recommendations for HOT lanes. Consequently, TJKM analyzed the traffic operations of various HOT lane alternatives in the I-680 Corridor. TJKM used a freeway operations model to evaluate HOT lane configurations in the southbound and northbound direction for 2000 conditions as well as 2025 conditions for four scenarios in the a.m. and p.m. peak periods. TJKM’s findings were used directly by Caltrans in the EIR/EIS for the I-680 Toll Lane project that will be constructed and operational in the next few years.
