Signal Timing & Operations

This course introduces the student to basic principles of signal timing, the allocation of green times to critical movements, safe clearance intervals and dilemma zone protection, signal preemption, and much more. The course has the student solve four basic signal timing problems using PlanSig developed by former TJKM Senior Associate, Gordon Lum, P.E., who is now a member of the City of Oakland's signal timing team.

This course demonstrates how experts develop signal timing plans for time-of-day and traffic responsive coordination and explores many difficult and unusual intersections. This course also provides students with the training necessary to solve several complex and hands-on real world problems while illustrating key aspects of signal timing efficiency and safety.
