The City of Redding (California) contracted with TJKM to coordinate 14 traffic signals on E. Cypress Avenue and Churn Creek Road, Redding’s two most congested corridors.
TJKM, in collaboration with City of Redding and Caltrans District 2 staff, developed nine different signal timing plans for weekdays and weekends. TJKM implemented the new timing plans during the week of August 18th through August 23rd, and the plans are now in daily operation.
TJKM’s recommended timing plans increased average speeds by more than 50 percent in the most congested hours on Friday afternoons, and red light wait-times decreased by more than 50 percent during most hours of the day (click here to see results). The number of stops was also reduced by 30 percent or more for most hours of the day. Redding’s Traffic Operations Manager, Gary Otremba, P.E., says, “Both corridors are operating great….Overall I am satisfied we spent the peoples’ money well.”
