Internship

TJKM regularly has openings for internship opportunities throughout the year. These full-time paid internships are for aspiring professionals looking for an opportunity to gain real-world work experience and build a portfolio with professional references. Interns work on a variety of tasks under the direct supervision of Project Manager. Priority will be given to candidates who are enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and require minimal supervision.

We Are Hiring

Travel Demand Modeler

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains travel demand and/or relevant models for generating and interpreting travel forecasts and related statistics for short- and long-range transportation plans and other special studies.
  • Responsible for the collection, processing, and management of traffic and other data to update the regional travel demand model and other products.
  • Performs model maintenance and improvement activities, including model calibration and validation.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses of travel data, present and publish reports associated with the analyses such as transportation system performance reports.
  • Communicate effectively orally, in writing, and graphically.
  • Requires personal initiative, sound independent judgment, and strong problem-solving skills based on transportation theories.
  • Represents TJKM at various meetings and conferences related to regional planning.
  • Perform related work, as required.

Requirements:

  • At a minimum, requires combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform duties and either a graduate degree with 2 years of related experience or an undergraduate degree in engineering with 4 years of related experience, or equivalent, in the field of engineering, statistics, and/or computer science.
  • Must have a current and valid California Driver’s License.

Abilities:

  • Working knowledge, education, and experience in multimodal travel demand modeling and forecasting.
  • Working knowledge of transportation planning, traffic engineering, statistical, and mathematical methods as well as federal transportation planning requirements.
  • Ability to effectively manage time, materials, and data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Computer Skills:

Strong knowledge of and/or experience with the following:

  • Travel demand modeling software such as Cube Voyager, TransCAD, Visum and its associated scripting language.
  • Programming language and debugging capability such as Python, C++, Java, and VB.
  • GIS mapping software such as ArcGIS and TransCAD.
  • Statistical estimation software such as R, SAS, and/or Alogit.
  • Transportation engineering software such as HCS and Synchro.
  • Spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software such as MS PowerPoint.

Assistant Planner/Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Transportation impact studies.
  • Bicycle/pedestrian plans.
  • Bicycle/pedestrian safety analysis.
  • Access, circulation and parking studies.
  • Growth and demand studies.
  • Transit forecasting and operations studies.
  • Traffic and transportation safety studies
  • Field review
  • Transportation analysis using the latest traffic engineering and planning software
  • Gather and analyze data, write report and prepare presentations and public outreach materials

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in planning plus one-year working/internship experience in transportation planning.
  • Must have experience with parking studies and analysis, transit planning and performance studies, facility financial analysis, transportation and land use analysis, pedestrian and bicycle study, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), traffic analysis software (Synchro), and graphic design (InDesign).
  • Must have a current and valid California Driver’s License.

Associate Transportation Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Work on various traffic engineering tasks and projects.
  • Coordinate traffic tasks with other staff working on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Must be well organized and able to manage multiple concurrent projects/tasks.
  • Investigate traffic problems and recommendation effective solutions.
  • Quality check and peer review of work done by other staff.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of work experience in traffic/transportation engineering environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or other related fields (Master’s degree is a plus).
  • State of California PE or TE registration is desirable.
  • Experience in traffic engineering, traffic operations, and signal operations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience with micro-simulation modeling is preferred.
  • Must have a current and valid California Driver’s License.
  • Professional experience in California is a plus.

Transportation Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Work on various tasks and projects related to Traffic Operations, Transportation Planning, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Multimodal and Safety Studies, Traffic Impact Studies/EIR documents, General Plan documents, Traffic Calming studies, Transportation Management Plans, Safe Route to School/Pedestrian and Bicycle projects, Freeway Operations, Traffic Signal Coordination projects, Traffic Micro-simulation and Macro-simulation Model Developments, Transit Priority, Freeway and Arterial Management Studies, and On-call Services for various cities in Northern California.
  • Prepare administrative, technical and statistical reports on traffic operational analyses, such as level of service analysis, traffic signal re-timing, collision analysis, safety measures, vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle volumes, or other traffic operational practices.
  • Identify deficiencies, gaps, analyze existing and future conditions scenarios, and develop recommendations to enhance operations and safety for all modes of transportation.
  • Apply traffic engineering, operations, and planning principles and experience for pre-development of large design-build, public/private partnership projects and conventional design-bid-build projects.
  • Develop models using Synchro, Sidra, HCS, and VISSIM for operational analysis of freeways, major roads, and local roads, signalized and unsignalized intersections.
  • Manage small, medium, and large complex projects related to traffic operations, transportation planning, intelligent transportation systems, multimodal, and safety studies; ensuring that the projects are delivered on schedule and within budget.
  • Coordinate tasks and projects with other team members working on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Conduct quality check and peer review of work done by other staff.
  • Assist in developing TJKM business in the areas of services TJKM provides.
  • Manage tight deadlines and unexpected requirement changes.
  • Oversee multiple projects, anticipate issues, propose solutions, and implement them successfully.
  • Work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.
  • Mentor less experienced staff and overseeing project teams in multiple geographic locations.
  • Manage project budget and interact with clients on assigned projects.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor in Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent +5 years of experience; or
  • Master in Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent for senior positions.

Senior Transportation Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Work on a variety of projects, which may include traffic and transit microsimulation, campus plans, multimodal corridor studies, transportation impact studies, bicycle and pedestrian studies, and regional transportation plans.
  • Manage projects and develop high quality internal and client relationships.
  • Analyze and solve complex transportation planning or engineering problems dealing with all travel modes.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, with strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Use a variety of software programs effectively and make timely and informed recommendations to elected officials, managers, and other decision makers.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 6 to 10 years of work experience in traffic/transportation engineering environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transportation planning and engineering principles and practices (e.g., Complete Streets, MUTCD, HCM, CEQA, NEPA).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related fields (Master’s Degree is a plus).
  • Experience in traffic impact studies, signal timing and operations, traffic engineering, freeway and arterial operations, and multimodal planning is required.
  • Proven track record of project management experience, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience in proposal writing.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial work environment.
  • Experience in preparation of environmental documentation (CEQA/NEPA) is a plus.
  • State of California PE, TE, or PTOE registration is desirable.
  • Must have a current and valid California Driver’s License.
  • Professional experience in California is a plus.

Transportation Design Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Managing engineering design projects and tasks including design of pedestrian and bike facilities, traffic signals, street lighting, signing and striping, traffic handling, and ITS projects.
  • Performing fieldwork, such as site review prior to design and support during construction.
  • Preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for design projects.
  • Direct client interaction.
  • Quality check and peer review of work done by other staff.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in transportation, civil or electrical engineering, or a closely-related field.
  • A civil engineering license in CA. Electrical and Traffic licenses are also preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD software, MS Word, and MS Excel.
  • MicroStation experience also desirable.
  • Minimum of 3 or 5 years of experience in hands-on transportation design assignments.
  • Significant experience with direct client interaction.
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines and unexpected requirement changes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Preparation of formal and informal letter proposals.
  • Familiarity with Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications.
  • Must have a current and valid California Driver’s License.
  • Professional experience in California is a plus.

Marketing Assistant

Responsibilities:

  • Formatting, updating, and proofing a variety of documents.
  • Establish and maintain submittal standards throughout the company.
  • Work with several project managers while adapting to continuously changing priorities.
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Assist in marketing efforts under the direction of Marketing Manager and accounting under Accounts Manager.
  • Provide additional staff support as needed for front desk, accounting, and marketing staff.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 4+ years of experience in marketing/office admin/word processing.
  • Must be proficient with advanced skills in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and grammar skills.
  • Experience in editing and creating documents using templates, and perseverance for multiple revisions.
  • Available 4 hours per day, with flexibility to work more hours to meet deadlines.
  • Available to work in both our San Jose and Pleasanton Offices as needed.
  • Excellent work ethic and willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Be self-directed, motivated, and require little direction and supervision.
  • Possess a California driver’s license.

Responsibilities:

  • Work on a variety of graphic design projects for use in print media and websites.
  • Design and create flyers, proposals, handouts, and presentations.
  • Design, develop, and maintain company website and other project related websites.
  • Introduce innovative and latest tools to improve the aesthetic of project deliverables.
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously, while adapting to continuously changing priorities.
  • Provide additional staff support as needed.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in graphic design or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of design and typography principles and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign programs.
  • Working knowledge of web design and WordPress themes.
  • Experience in creating visual presentations using PowerPoint and/or Prezi and other innovative tools.
  • Must be proficient with intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office.
